Alistair Young (Senior Sustainability Legal Consultant) is an
admitted South African Attorney who completed his tertiary education at
the University of Cape Town where he obtained a BA degree specialising
in environmental science, and LLB degree, and master's degree
specialising in International and South African Environmental Law
(LLM). His LLM dissertation focused on the negative impacts of
large dams on the environment and the curtailment of such impacts
through the application of relevant international environmental
conventions and indigenous environmental legislation. Alistair
completed his legal articles through a general practice firm of
attorneys based in Cape Town and was, upon his admission as an attorney
in the beginning of 2006, appointed as a professional assistant.
Alistair operated in such capacity until his appointment as a
sustainability legal consultant as IMBEWU in March 2007.
Since joining IMBEWU Alistair has primarily been involved
in environmental and mine, health and safety legal compliance audits for
major mining operations in South Africa and has recently become involved in
health and safety legal compliance auditing for industrial operations.
Alistair is also responsible for the on-going development of the IMBEWU
Safety, Health and Environmental Legal Register and has written a number of
legal opinions on a variety of issues for a broad spectrum of clients.
Alistair is also involved in the presentation of various legal training
courses offered by IMBEWU dealing with inter alia the South African waste
management legal regime.
