Marine and Coastal Management Law
IMBEWU has specific in-house knowledge and expertise in marine and coastal law.
IMBEWU has conducted work for the National Ports Authority which required detailed knowledge of the national, regional and international legislation applicable in this context. IMBEWU also reviewed and advised on the draft Marine and Coastal Management Bill.
IMBEWU has a comprehensive understanding of the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act 24 of 2008 and especially regarding its implications for developments and activities taking place on the coastal zone.
In the second half of 2012, Catherine Warburton of IMBEWU worked with the International Ocean Institute for the Department of Transport to produce a Draft Ballast Water Management Bill. The Bill seeks to give effect to SA's obligations in terms of the International Ballast Water Management Convention, which SA ratified in April 2008. In November 2012 a National Stakeholder Workshop was conducted in Cape Town to obtain comments on the first draft of the Bill. Thereafter, IMBEWU assisted with the preparation of a draft Memorandum of Understanding between the relevant organs of state to facilitate the effective implementation of the Bill.. |
